Robbie Long - Snapshots by John Williams

One of the great mysteries of life is why some people become superstars and others just plug away for years in the music scene often with a great deal more talent than the aforesaid superstars. Robbie Long has been on the Australian music scene for over twenty years and yet this is his first CD. And the bloke owns his own recording studio to boot! You’ve all seen him perform with groups such as The Lawnmowers, Davidson Brothers, Totally Gourdgeous and Waiting for Guinness. You’ve seen him partnering Liz Frencham, Kate Fagan and Phil Emmanuel. Now you can listen to his sublime guitar music on his own CD. And what a treat it is. I have listened to this CD more than any other I have reviewed. I like it that much. It is just great to have playing in the background as you go about your daily tasks. It is also perfect for those quiet, reflective times such as sitting on the verandah watching a glorious sunset with a beverage of your choice. The CD opens with one of Robbie’s own compositions “The Fishy Song”. It is a simply a beautiful piece of music and a great start to a quality CD. The second track is a traditional bluegrass medley “Beaumont Rag/Salt Creek”. It is interesting to hear these tunes played by one instrument alone. Talk about a toe tapper. This one is a really uplifting track. The traditional tune “Sally Gardens” is another track which allows Robbie to show his deft touch on the guitar. It is worth getting the CD for this track alone. “Landslide” is another original composition from Robbie and shows his versatility as a composer/performer. His slide guitar work is a feature on this track. “Crystal Silence” composed by Gary Burton and “The Slow Reel” by Donal Lunney are both quiet, contemplative tracks which are just so easy to listen to. The CD finishes with Robbie playing and singing the great Hoagy Carmichael classic “Georgia on my Mind”. He does it justice. If you like guitar music played at the highest level then this CD is one you should have in your collection. Robbie, do us all a favor and get back into your studio for a follow up CD. And don’t wait another twenty years please!
