Ann Vriend ‘Modes of Transport’ CD Review by John Williams

Ann Vriend hails from Edmonton, Canada, and is an extremely talented singer/songwriter/pianist. She has been performing for several years now, mainly in North America and has just completed an extensive Australian tour taking in the Illawarra and Woodford Folk Festivals. This is her second CD out of the five she has recorded so far. She wrote all the songs on this CD and they are a showcase for her talent. I guess many readers will have caught her act somewhere during her tour and may have already purchased one of her CDs but if you haven’t then this CD would be a good way to catch up with this talented artist. She is really easy to listen to and has a beautiful voice. ‘Same Thing for You’ is about a woman baring her soul and letting her lover know she is willing to take a chance. ‘Crowd Pleaser’ is a catchy number. ‘The Invisibles’ is a beautifully constructed song about a romance of convenience which is just not working. It shows the vocal talents of Ann Vriend at their best. ‘Where My Heart Lies’ shows how love is not rational at all and is worth a listen ‘Feeling Fine’ is a song where Ann really lays her feelings on the line. I guess every travelling musician will relate to this track. It constructs the situation beautifully and is a very thought provoking song. ‘Don’t Cry’ is a track in a similar vein. Ann must have had a bad tour at one stage or just one tour too many at the time. ‘You Got Me’ is a song of hope that an unlikely relationship is heading in the right direction. ‘No Stranger to Love’ and ‘Here We Are’ are songs about relationships and the battles we fight to sustain them. The final track, ‘Backseat Driver’ is another hopeful track about the pathways of life and how we can share them if someone will let us. This is an easy to listen to CD with thoughtful lyrics presented by a talented singer with plenty to say. I can recommend it.
