Nightflight 2005 Anthony McGloin
By Henk te Veldhuis

The debut album from this acoustic guitarist who is heading from Corrimal, Australia is impressive. McGloin plays a mix of bluegrass, finger-style, folk and jazz. On some tracks there is some additional mandolin or an extra guitar. The opening track Restless Spirit shows us some influences of Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel with the damping string technique and a lot of groove. Certainly one of the best compositions of this CD. The Silly Season with the added mandolin is expressing a bluegrass feeling with fast killer chops. Some covers like Get Back from Lennon and McCartney and Ray from Lennon and McCartney and Ray Davies, Summer Afternoon are very well arranged. Separate Ways is an intimate ballad written by Tony McGloin with rich harmonics played on his Jim Williams guitar. This guitar has a unique sound with deep basses and a very sparkling sound. Ship in the Storm, an adventurous journey with moody, flowing and fast passages surely has as well top-notch guitar techniques as an alluring setup. Nightflight the title piece is provocative yet demanding, and the composing skills and creativity of Tony McGloin are noteworthy. Summer in Hidden Valley is gentle, touching, reflective and has rich harmonics. The CD ends with Going Home a spiritual voyage with a fine melody line. Anthony McGloin is a promising finger-style guitarist, check him out at www.anthonymcgloin.com
