Gary Shearston – Pathways of a Celtic Land

$15.00

Shearston at his most philosophical – just prior to his death, Gary had written a multitude of songs, many of which can be heard on this wonderful, warm collection – covering his favourite themes of hope, love, peace and justice.
Review by Graham Blackley
Prolific Australian singer and songwriter Gary Shearston, who sadly passed away on July 1 2013, recorded 100 songs in the last eight years of his life. Ten of these songs are to be found on the excellent album Pathways of a Celtic Land which stands as a testament to Shearston’s vitality and creativity. This deliciously eclectic album is characterised by a warm expansive sound that encompasses elements of folk, pop and even jangly indie rock. At times Shearston sounds uncannily like a folkie version of Scottish indie pop hero Edwyn Collins of Orange Juice fame. Shearston’s deep and resonant vocals are put to great effect on the moving Except (Missing You) which features a moody atmosphere and subtle musicianship that complements the lyrics perfectly. The uplifting sky-kissing Byrdsian guitar solo on the effervescent Slow Going and the muscular yet effortless groove that underpins so many of the songs ensures that this album is likely to be a delight for those of us who embrace rock with the same intensity that we love folk music.
