Description

Lonnie Martin – A Moving Hand by John Williams.
This is a fine CD.
I enjoyed it immensely.
If you like beautiful harmonies, crystal clear voices and sensitive treatment of songs then you will enjoy this effort from Lonnie Martin.
Lonnie sings on all tracks and also accompanies herself on guitar on several tracks.
She has also been accompanied by a number of talented singers and musicians to create a special CD.
The CD opens with the traditional ‘Canaan’s Land’ and Lonnie’s voice combines with Cloudstreet (John Thompson and Nicole Murray who arranged the song) to give a memorable opening track.
‘Geraldine and Ruthie May’ is a lovely track with the viola of Helen Rowe, Rhys Owen’s guitar and Bec Wright’s cello adding to its gorgeous sound.
‘Sleepless Sailor’ and ‘Cobweb of Dreams’ with Helen Rowe, Ros Roche and Lonnie’s beautiful trio of voices are two special tracks which create a memorable sound.
One of my favorite tracks was ‘Black, Muddy River’.
Rhys Owen on guitar and Don Jarmey on octave mandolin add a great backing to this track.
Lonnie’s soulful voice gives this song about being alone a special poignancy.
‘Peg and Awl’ sees Lonnie and Helen Rowe combining to create another memorable song about technology putting workers out of business in the early 1800s.
Nothing much has changed in two hundred years.
The next track ‘Dillard Chandler’ combines with the traditional ‘Li’l Liza Jane’ played on fiddle by Helen Rowe and has a great chorus to sing along to.
‘Lies’ is another fine track.
Lonnie is joined by Rhys Owen and Helen Rowe on this thought provoking track.
Rose Broe on accordion, John Holmberg on banjo, Ryk Rostron on guitar and mandolin and Michael Tully on bass help to create a great track with ‘So Say The Vikings’ which was arranged by Pirate Brides.
‘I Can’t Stand Up Alone’ shows Lonnie’s powerful voice to full effect.
On the track ‘Lifeline (Harriet Tubman)’ Lonnie is joined by Don Jarmey, guitar, Jamie Caulfield, fiddle, and Mat Keely, percussion, in an arrangement by Jigger.
This memorable anti slavery song about the ex slave Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railway to freedom in the North is my favorite track on the CD.
I can recommend this CD.
You will enjoy it too, if you like beautiful voices combined with talented musicianship.
It is just so easy on the ears and is a special listening experience.
