Already hailed as “one of the most beautiful and intimate collection of songs you’re likely to hear this year” [Times Out Magazine, June 2004] lucie thorne’s new album ‘the bud’ shines with her rich, dark voice, and her compelling writing.

‘the bud’ was recorded on and off over 8 months in 2003-2004 at a house by the ocean south of Melbourne (by lucie and Rohan Drape), and in London by Tom Hall, who’s careful and beautiful guitar playing also features on the album.

Lucie Thorne – The Bud

One of Australia’s leading young soulful singer/songwriters, lucie thorne been earning herself a loyal following whereever she goes with her unique blend of passionate folk/roots music. After growing up in Northern Tasmania, lucie is now based in Melbourne, and tours regularly and extensively across Australia, Canada, the US and the UK.

In June 2004, lucie released her new full-length album, ‘the bud’ (little secret records). The much-awaited follow-up to ‘botticelli blue

eyes’- which was included in Rhythms’ Magazine’s Best Albums of 2003 – this new record captures the warmth and intimacy that so distinguish lucie’s live shows. Already hailed as “a stunningly beautiful album” [The Canberra Times] and as “the most beautiful and intimate collection of songs you’re likely to hear this year” [David Curry, Times Out Magazine] ‘the bud’ shines with lucie’s rich, dark voice and her compelling writing.

The album also features the beautiful and careful guitar playing of London-based musician Tom Hall, as well as cameo appearences by talented locals Carl Pannuzzo (singing and percussion) and Heath Cullen (guitar). lucie’s 2004 European tour dates will be in duet with Tom Hall, and Heath Cullen will be joining lucie on stage for much of her 2004/2005 Australian touring schedule.

lucie’s heartfelt songs of people and place, combined with her disarming honesty and charm, combine for “a really engaging perform[ance]…you don’t want to take your eyes off her” [Judy’s Punch Magazine].

“A fine, dark voice. Poetic, heartfelt lyrics. And a window into a world of pain and yearning. Australian singer-songwriter Lucie Thorne grew up in Northern Tasmania, but these days, when not on the road, makes her home in Melbourne. The Bud, which is Thorne’s third full-length CD, includes musical support from Tom Hall (guitar), Rohan Drape (piano), Heath Cullen (guitar) and Carl P211-11,13zz. (pCtCl_Abr5i01-1, support vocals) and has artwork by Rachel Stone. There are ten tracks on the album — linked musically by a predominance of ballads and lyrically by a focus on interpersonal relationships. Although the songs are inherently sad — providing a window into a world of pain and yearning — they also hint at resilience and the hope of resurrection. Lucie Thome’s The Bud is an excellent album, which has a depth and quality of soul-searching that is reminiscent of the very best of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s songs.” Review by Sue Barrett
